Beginning with You Showing Up – Being Real (a recorded sermon)

Speaker:  Rev. Marlin Lavanhar

It’s Pot Luck Sunday!

Bring something to share and join us for a delicious combination of food, conversation, and getting-to-know-you better.

Richard & Joanne Farnsworth:

We collect “gently used” teddy bears. We clean them up and then we do our very own “teddy bear hospital” – repairing the bears and replacing eyes or noses. Finally, we give them beautiful Christmas ribbons and tie on gift tags so they are ready for Christmas.

Years past, we’ve found that women’s and children’s services or battered women’s shelters are the most appreciative and grateful for used toys such as teddy bears at Christmas time. Last year we donated 30 – 40 bears to the Galveston Resource and Crisis Center, along with other much needed donations.

This year we’ve already collected 16 adorable bears. We have in our sights the Women’s Center of East Texas Advocacy & Resource Center, which has a shelter. If we collect enough bears, we may be able to provide other shelters or organizations here in Longview with Christmas bears for families in need.

Any bear or other stuffed animal, new or used, is welcome to join our Christmas project.  Just bring your donations to the Fellowship and put them in the Christmas Teddy Bear box in the lobby.

And when we do donate the teddy bears at Christmas time, we will be sure to say that they came from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Longview!

Barbara Cavin:

Next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up an extra can of tuna, jar of peanut butter, bag of rice, can of chili, or any other non-perishable food item and bring it with you to the Fellowship on Sunday and put it in the food basket in the lobby and I will take it to Longview Community Ministries to help feed the poor and hungry of our community.
